The Ang family has been in the restaurant business ever since the early 1900’s. They had one of the most well known tea houses in Shanghai.
It was in the mid 1940’s wherein they decided that they would have a better business opportunity and that they would also be safer given the state the world was in during World War II.
They initially moved to San Francisco, California. It was a bit easier for them to adapt because of two reasons; their children all studied abroad and were fluent in English, and because cooking was one of the occupations that the American’s, back then, did not mind other people doing.
They stayed in California for decades but decided to move to New York City in 1989 when they found that it would be cheaper to move there since two of their children already had jobs in New York and their youngest was accepted in New York University.
They immediately saw the opportunity to open up a their tea house in New York. The officially opened in 1995 and have been making a name for themselves ever since.
“We felt like celebrating my son’s straight A report card by taking him out to his favorite dim sum spots in the city! They have always had the best golden shrimp dumpling! To be honest, I could just have that all night! We were delighted to find out that if your child gets an A, you get a discount. It is honestly the most Asian thing ever but I love it! They even gave us a free entrée because my son got straight As! Even the a-yis in the restaurant were impressed!” – Trevor Ang
“Never really got the whole point of dim sum restaurants till I tried out Golden Dragon Tea House. This is where I understood the whole concept of yum cha. I have to admit, I am all for that Chinese auntie life! Tea, mahjong, and dim sum is all you really need in life!” – Anthony Price
“It honestly kind of felt like I was eating my nai nia’s cooking. It made me miss her so much and brought so many wonderful memories back. I can not wait to come back and eat more of their dim sum and noodles.” – Henson Gao
